I HAD TO ADMIT, MEGANâS plan to return to the tree lot made me more curious than suspicious.
âThe big trees are gone,â I reminded her as we drove out of town toward the highway. âRemember, you took the last good one.â
She stuck her tongue out at me.
âMature.â But I laughed anyway.
Only one car sat in the parking area. There were still trees left. We both jumped out of the truck.
Rob Sawyer waved, tugging an earbud free. He snapped his fingers and pointed at Megan. âHey, I know you. How did you do with that giant tree?â
âIt shook loose and then I slid off the road.â
Robâs eyes nearly fell out. âWhat? No way.â
Ethan stomped over in his heavy boots. âI told you. You never should have sold her that big a tree. Iâm sorry, miss.â
Rob looked past Megan to me. âHey, Nick. Weâll get to you in a sec.â He turned to his brother. âI swear, I tied it really good. You arenât going to sue us, are you?â he asked Megan.
Ethan jabbed Rob. âYou donât ask a customer that, dingus.â
âSorry. I obviously canât go back in time for a do-over.â
âActually, you can,â Megan said. âNot the back in time part, but the do-over part. Sell us the rest of your trees.â
âThe rest?â Rob turned to the lot. âWeâve got like, twenty left. What are you going to do with twenty Christmas trees?â
I joined the group. âUm, Megan? What are we going to do with twenty trees?â
Robâs nose scrunched. âYouâre with her?â
No use in lying. Both Sawyers would know Iâd been holding out if Iâd never mentioned Megan working for us. Sharp, captivating, and obviously not a townie like us, theyâd have made it their business to get to know her. âWe met...later that day.â
Ethanâs eyes widened. âYou followed her?â
I cut him a hard look. âI found her in the ditch with the tree she bought from you guys pointed into a bush.â
Megan turned to me. âDid you find me? Or did you have a hot tip from these guys?â
Uh-oh. Fire smoldered in her eyes. I may have come clean how Iâd tried to swindle her out of the tree, but she didnât know Iâd sought her out.
She shot me a quick look and turned back to the Sawyer brothers. âIf itâs true you did a crap tie-job and you told Nick about it with some kind of hope he could take my tree, well, that makes this deal even more crucial.â
Rob tugged at the cord of his ever-present earbuds. âI didnât tell him to go after you, I swear.â
Every muscle in my body clenched. Shut up, dude.
âShut up, Rob,â Ethan said. âAnd what deal?â
Megan straightened, seeming to rise a few inches. âThe deal youâre giving us for these trees. Youâre going to deliver them to the mayorâs mansion and place them along the driveway leading up to the house. Weâll need white lights and extension cords. And an external power source.â
Rob and Ethan looked at each other and burst out laughing.
